Hello!  I see that it has been some time since I have uploaded a journal (April).  I've been putting off writing this one, but since I am no longer as active here as I was in the past, now seems to be the time.

I won't be uploading any more photographs or fan fictions to this site.  It was fun, but real life has kept me away from the camera, and there is very little time to write fan fictions.  I don't think that anyone read the last several submissions as most of my watchers have left, but they were fun to write--especially the Miseducation of Lavinia Llywnog.  Two years and twenty chapters--it was certainly a project!  Thanks again to JosieCarioca and ameraucanablues for the permission to use their characters.

Thanks to all of my friends here.  Your encouragement was appreciated and your art, photos and fictions inspired me.

I won't be taking a complete leave of this site.  I will continue to visit.  I don't like to say goodbye, so I'll just say:  See you later!

A 7.8 level earthquake has devastated Ecuador, leaving towns in ruins and causing at least 654 deaths and over 16,000 injuries.…  One of our own deviants, and a good friend of mine :iconveronika-art: lives in Ecuador with her family.  Thankfully they are all fine, but many of their friends and neighbors have suffered terrible losses.  You can read about it in her journal here:   Aid for Earthquake victims in EcuadorA 7.8 magnitude earthquake has devastated the northern east coast of Ecuador, leaving towns in ruins and causing at least 654 deaths and over 16,000 injuries. w

I live in Quito, Ecuador where we also felt it strongly, on April 16th. We are very lucky, but others are not :(
Many children, teens, elderly people, pets and entire families lost everything...
If you are so inclined to donate to the victims of the 7.8 earthquake, you can donate to the Red Cross from Ecuador at this link.

If you wish to help, here is the link that she has suggested.  Every little bit helps--even a dollar or a Euro will go a long way in contributing towards fresh water, medicine and temporary shelter!  I know how generous people on this site can be.  Thanks again for your kindness!…

Year of the Monkey 2016

Journal Entry: Sun Jan 31, 2016, 10:15 AM

Happy New Year, everyone! I am doing the New Year feature a bit early this year, since February 8, 2016, which begins the Year of the Monkey, also ends my core membership. This will be my last feature journal, so I figured that hailing the new year would be a good idea to end it. I don't know about all of you, but 2015, the Year of the Sheep, came in like a lamb and went out like a ram, leaving a lot of us pretty bruised. Let's hope that this year is better!

RIP AnnaKirsten

Journal Entry: Sat Jan 9, 2016, 9:21 AM

I am sorry to report the death of another deviant at the beginning of this year.  AnnaKirsten was a member of this community for ten years. She was best known to watchers for her beautiful and meticulous fractal art, which garnered her nine DDs.  She was also a talented nature photographer.  I did not know her well on this site, but I did appreciate her beautiful work.  Here is a retrospective of her work, in her memory.

It is 2016, a new year, and a time for new resolutions and new beginnings.  Unfortunately for AliceTerrarium the beginning of this year has been beset with health-related problems.  Read more here:
New YearSo this isn’t going to be your average happy new year post. Mainly for me because I will be heading into the new year with all my illnesses.
In fact there is only one thing I would love for the new year. A service dog.
Having a service dog would mean I could either continue my university studies, or hold down a full time job.
The only thing is, they cost money, the training will cost money.
So I’ve opened commissions HERE @alice-terrarium
I’m very willing to do small illustrations for a donation too, even $1 would be so so helpful.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read this.
If you’d like to know more please message me :)
I’m looking forward to 2016. I want this to be the year of healing. Happy new year! <3

Any commission would be appreciated.  AliceTerrarium is a very talented artist with a beautiful style.  The end goal is to afford a service dog, which would allow continuation of school and work.  Here are some examples of this deviant's art:

Sea Jewels by AliceTerrarium  Even Angels Fall by AliceTerrarium  Purple Star Child by AliceTerrarium  Aranjuez by AliceTerrarium

You can find the link for commissions in the artist's journal, which I have linked above.  Thanks for your kind consideration--this community has always been generous. Even if you cannot afford a commission now, please feature a link to AliceTerrarium's journal to increase awareness here on dA!  Happy New Year!

My Daily Deviation Highlights

Sat Aug 22, 2015, 8:06 PM
I heard about this community volunteer project from :iconkaz-d: and couldn't pass it by!  Here are my entries and here is some more information about the project:

Welcome to a Community Volunteer project in which we will be highlighting our favourite Daily Deviations featured within the recent weeks! We would like to encourage the community to join in on this project by simply going through the Daily Deviations page and collecting some of their favourite pieces of art within a journal titled "My Daily Deviation Highlights"! We hope this project will help spread awareness and love for Daily Deviations and our fellow deviant artists!

DeviantArt Questionnaire

Fri Aug 7, 2015, 8:47 AM
  1. How long have you been on DeviantArt?  Four years.

  2. What does your username mean?  The "Gryff" is a reference to Gryffindor House in Harry Potter (even though I was eventually sorted into Ravenclaw) and a play on the word gryphon, since I've always liked this mythical creature.

  3. Describe yourself in three words.  Creative, curious and concerned.

  4. Are you left or right handed?  Right handed.

  5. What was your first deviation?  This photo of the peonies in my yard:   Peonies in bloom by Gryffgirl

  6. What is your favourite type of art to create?  It's a tie between nature photos and writing fan fiction!

  7. If you could instantly master a different art style, what would it be?  I wish that I could draw.  It would be wonderful to know how to do line illustrations and painting!

  8. What was your first favourite?  I believe that I deleted it when I was doing a clean-up!  However I still follow the very talented :iconalexander-rowe: and this is my oldest favorite in my favorites folder:   b l a c k b i r d by Alexander-Rowe

  9. What type of art do you tend to favourite the most?  Lots of traditional art, especially watercolors, HP fanart, nature photography and some excellent fiction and poems.

  10. Who is your all-time favourite deviant artist?  Oh, don't make me choose!  That is unfair!  However I will always follow these talented people:  :icongold-seven:, :iconstelari:, :iconpinkparasol:, :iconthrumyeye:, :iconrhcheng:; :iconcabepfir:; :iconthegeekcanpaint:--too short a list here!

  11. If you could meet anyone on DeviantArt in person, who would it be?  Easy--:iconjosiecarioca:, :icone-c-h:; :iconrosazaira:; :iconjoeyv7:; and of course I would love to see :iconameraucanablues: again!

  12. How has a fellow deviant impacted your life?  Most definitely!  :iconjosiecarioca: and :iconameraucanablues: gave me the confidence to start writing again when I entered a fan fiction contest that they sponsored.  Also, all of the people here who fave and comment on my photos and stories are all a huge inspiration.

  13. What are your preferred tools to create art?  Microsoft word and a camera--no preference.

  14. What is the most inspirational place for you to create art?  There is no one place, although all of my writing is done in the study.

  15. What is your favourite DeviantArt memory?  Receiving a DD!  It was so unexpected and I was so happy!  This favorite memory is tied with the outpouring of love that I witnessed for :iconwhisperwings: from the community here.  Although there are always lots of complaints about trolls, there are so many more good people on this site.

Feature: STelari and Feienin

Thu Apr 16, 2015, 5:46 AM
This journal is a special feature for two extraordinary artists on dA:  :iconstelari: and :iconaliceterrarium::.  They will be moving in together and are saving up, but would certainly appreciate it if you would take a look at their Etsy and Society6 shops.  The art and artisan crafts in their shops is beautiful, high quality and very reasonably priced.  Really, it is a win/win situation for everyone--you will be helping out two young artists who are in love (and what can be better than that) and you will have a beautiful piece of art to display!  I've been following :iconstelari: for a long time on dA and she is not only a talented artist, she is also also a kind person who has volunteered as a c.v. for traditional art deviations, runs the :icongrimgloomtale: group and has supported gifted but overlooked artists on this site through (-404) Deviant Found series.  Here is the link to her journal for their Etsy shops:  <da:thumb id="525551476"/>

I am also featuring some of my favorites from their galleries, just in case you are not familiar with their beautiful art.  Follow them!

Happy New Year and See You Later

Wed Feb 18, 2015, 5:16 PM
Hello everyone!  Just a brief journal to let you know that I will be away for a while.  I'm counting on being back on this site in early April, so in the meantime stay well and I am looking forward to seeing all of your lovely drawings/photos/stories when I return!

I would be remiss if I didn't post a feature here to celebrate the Asian New Year.  Some say Year of the Sheep, others say Year of the Goat, but whichever you choose I hope that it will be a happy, healthy and artistically rich one for you!

If You Have OCs, Comment!

Journal Entry: Mon Jan 12, 2015, 8:26 PM
I got this cool idea from :iconaymstersilver:.  See his journal here:   If you have OCs, comment!I got this from :iconBistraja:
Everyone with OCs are welcome to participate.
 (please read)
1. For the first 7 people who comment on this journal, I will feature one of their characters I like the most and comment my choice. (I will go to your gallery and pick one character and one picture I like, you don't need to tell me which one)
2. If you comment, please do the same in your journal, and put me in the first feature slot. The idea of this is not to get a free feature, it is to spread art around for everyone! I feature you after you made the journal.
Slot 1 Bistraja Derek and Kayleen

I really couldn't choose which character I liked better because I like them both equally for very different reasons.  I like Kayleen for her fun, humorous side, and I like Derek for his contrasting, aloof personality - a perfect balance.  On top of that, these characters are both enigmas - their lives, shrouded in a thick veil of

Slot 1  AymsterSilver Guillermo de la Guarda & Sarah Locke
1940s Guillermo and Sarah by AymsterSilver
What a tough choice!  AymsterSilver is a master at creating nuanced OCs who are both visually appealing and have intriguing backstories.  I adore Evelyn, his fabulous eighteenth century cross-dresser and super BAMFs Wanda and Rodrigo, just to name a few.  In the end I cheated and went with a couple.  Guillermo de la Guarda and Sarah Locke are one of my favorite OC couples.  They may seem like opposites, but these star-crossed lovers belong together and their romance is both sweet and hot!  The fact that Guillermo refers tenderly to Sarah as "mi universo" due to the galaxy of freckles covering her makes me melt!  That's not the only thing that makes me melt--I freely admit that when choosing to feature Guillermo it was greatly due to the fact that he's exceedingly hot!  His face, physique and daring fashion sense keep me coming back to his creator's gallery for hopes of finding some new pictures as well as more details on his mysterious past!  In fact Guillermo shares so many things in common with my OC Sebastian--early family tragedy, shady criminal past, an ability to stay cool during intensely dangerous situations and always looks good at the same time--that it's downright eerie!

Slot 2 JosieCarioca  Evelyn Black
The Raven by JosieCarioca
There are some talented artists who bring their OCs to life through beautiful art and others who create memorable characters through well-written stories.  Then there are the rare ones like JosieCarioca who can do both!  I first noticed this gorgeous woman in the lovely portraits in her gallery and was doubly excited to find that she was the protagonist in a fascinating fanfiction that takes place in the Harry Potter universe after the Second War.  I do admit to feeling some initial trepidation since I hew very close to canon when it comes to HP fanfics and am very apprehensive when I discover that an OC is paired off with a canon character.  To my delight I found out that JosieCarioca is also a stickler for canon as well and has created a character who is intelligent, warm, fiery and so witty.  Yes, she is Severus Snape's love interest, but the story is taking a slow, realistic pace towards the build-up of their relationship.  The Snape in her story is as canon as J.K. Rowling's and Evelyn is a middle-aged historian with no special magical powers--unless you count her ability to charm and intrigue!  This warm and vivacious Irishwoman captured my heart and imagination and inspired me to write about her (with her creator's gracious permission).   If I could spend any time with another person's OC it would be Evelyn.  I would love to have brunch with her and chat about history, literature and certain Slytherin men!

Slot 3 Skullenrae  Wrath

I've always been a big fan of science fiction stories set in dystopian futures, and if that dystopian world is steampunk I'm extremely interested!  Skullenrae has created such a world with its own rich history which served as an excellent template to explain the group of pirate mercenaries aboard the ship Millenium!  My favorite member of the crew is Wrath.  He is the proverbial loose cannon on a rolling deck and since he is on a ship, that description is highly appropriate!  His role is described as "the bruiser" which gives him the dual job of interrogating merchants whose ships are raided and roughing them up, two jobs which he enjoys a bit too much.  His two basic moods are bored or out for blood, and the unhinged, manic glee on his face shows that the latter is his preferred, natural state.  He is chaos personified who neither has nor respects rules and laws, but when you're battling an evil empire you want this man who thrives on violence out front--which is where he would want to be as well!

Slot 4 ameraucanablues:  Paulo Pereira
Dr. Paulo Pereira, M.D. -- Original Character by ameraucanablues
It would be easy for most people to think that I only like bad boys, given my gushing over Guillermo and my own sly OC, Sebastian.  Wrong!  I've always had a very soft spot for sweet, shy intellectuals, and with Dr. Pereira it was love at first sight for me!  Like JosieCarioca's Evelyn Black (JosieCarioca co-owns Paulo) he is a Muggle-born Squib who cannot perform magic, but can certainly perceive it.  He's Evelyn's brother-in-law and is part of the Harry Potter AU, but like Evelyn Black he is a strong enough character who can stand on his own with his own interesting history.  Paulo is a Portugese pathologist who was educated at Oxford and is currently living and working in Ireland when his story takes place. I love good mysteries and the story of how he and his partner, (later wife) Caitlin Black unraveled a murder mystery through slow, patient and extensive forensic research was wonderfully satisfying.  It showed so many facets of his personality--intellectual, hard-working, kind, determined to bring about justice and yes, romantic.  ameraucanablues describes him as a person who prefers "the precious solitude offered by nature than the rambunctiousness of city life. He is also an accomplished chef, preferring to invite his friends to a home-cooked banquet than go to a local pub."  Don't be completely fooled--when Paulo is in the mood and has a few drinks in him he can really let loose (as the pictures in his creator's gallery show).  Definitely my kind of guy!

Slot 5 DaughterRootless Tempest Birch
Frankly Tempest by DaughterRootless
Tempest Birch is an OC in the Harry Potter universe, an American witch who is on her own dangerous quest during the First War.  I liked her immediately because her character is as far from a Mary-Sue as can be possible.  Tempest is not conventionally pretty.  She is admittedly not concerned about hygiene.  She smokes too much pot, gets drunk and sleeps around.  She is usually mellow, but when pushed has a fierce temper which can lead to some wonderfully foul swearing and some pretty nasty hexes.  She has a big heart but falls in love with a man who, though smart and interesting, is not good for her.  She makes some pretty bad decisions.  Yet through it all she is optimistic, resourceful, loyal and dedicated.  She openly defies authority and questions social mores--all things that most of us would like to do, but few have the nerve to do.  I love free spirits, and this hippie girl with the gloriously unkempt hair and chill attitude is certainly someone I would like to see more of!

Question Time

Journal Entry: Thu Jan 1, 2015, 5:30 PM
I saw this tag on :iconaymstersilver:'s journal and what the heck, I decided to do it.

1. You must post the rules.
2. Each person must say 5 things about themselves in their journal.
3. Answer the questions the tagger set for you in their post and create five new questions for the people you tag to answer.
4. You have to choose 10 people to tag and post their icons on your journal.
5. Go to their page and tell them you have tagged them.
6. No tag backs.

Five things about myself:

1.  I'm a cat lover.
2.  If I'm reincarnated I want to come back as either a cat or a fox.
3.  I didn't get married or have children until I was over thirty.
4.  I always have cold hands and feet in the winter and have to wear socks to bed.
5.  On election day if people accost me and say "Vote for ...." I tell them that I was going to, but now I'm not, just to see their facial expressions.

AymsterSilver's Questions:

1. Did you play imaginary games when you were a child?  If you did who did you pretend to be?
I played imaginary games all of the time with my friends and siblings!  We started out acting out favorite cartoons and Grimm's Fairy Tales (the grimmer, the better) and had props and costumes.  We progressed to Greek mythology.  The other girls always wanted to be Aphrodite which was O.K. with me since I found her fairly boring.  I liked being Athena because she was wise, had a fabulous headdress and an owl!  I still love owls. :iconowl-plz:

2. Have you ever been to the hospital for some reason or another?  If so, what was it for?

Unfortunately aside from birth, I went to the E.R. when a glass bowl shattered in my left hand at age 11.  I still have a fish hook shaped scar on my little finger and cannot fully bend it because the tendon in the upper joint was severed.  Fortunately the only other time I was in the hospital after that was when I gave birth to my twin daughters. :ambulance:

3. Are you in the middle of writing a story?  What's it about?

Yes!  I am writing a story for my good friends :iconjosiecarioca: and :iconameraucanablues: featuring their OC, Lavinia Llwynog, a fox animagus.  I like writing stories with strong female characters and they were kind enough to allow me to write one about her.  The title is "The Miseducation of Lavinia Llwynog"--thirteen chapters so far and only a few more to go!   Lavinia 'Vinnie' Llwynog by JosieCarioca

4. Who is your favourite OC from your collection of characters, as of yet?

Oh, how can you ask me that?  That is like asking me who is my favorite child--I love them all!  Honestly it is a tie between Wendy and Sebastian.  Mother and son are very different characters, but I keep coming back to them in my writings.

5. If you could create a holiday, what would it be celebrating?

Not sure, but it would involve a lot of food, drink, entertainment and no one is allowed to go to work or school! :iconsomeconfettiplz:

That was certainly fun!  I tag all of you:  :iconjosiecarioca:, :iconameraucanablues:, :iconweasley-detectives:, :iconleochi:, :icone-c-h:, :iconsunnysorceress:, :iconjoeyv7:, :iconalexander-rowe:, :iconinkyrose:, :iconskullenrae: and anyone else who might want to do it!  No pressure--but it is a fun way to start the new year!

Here are my questions:

1.  Name the artist or writer who truly influenced you to write and/or draw.  What is your favorite work by them?
2.  Name a movie that is a guilty pleasure, i.e. most people think that it's awful or silly but you really like it.
3.  If you met your O.C. or someone else's, who would it be and what would you do or talk about?
4.  As a child who was your hero (Can be real or fictional)?
5.  Did you like high school/secondary school or were you looking forward to graduating from it?

Least Favorite Christmas Song

Journal Entry: Sun Dec 21, 2014, 3:34 PM
There are some great Christmas songs on the radio, but is there one that you absolutely hate? On a good day you wince and change the station when it comes on, and on a bad day it almost drives you to homicidal rage? Here is mine with a little back story: I was at a party and this one was on the playlist (WHY?). After it was finished a little girl went to the stereo and played it again. It ended and she replayed at least four times! I love kids, but I was fantasizing about dunking her head in the punch bowl for a slow count of ten. What is the song? Here it is. Absolutely horrible to hear once, induces insanity on repeat hearings. I dare all of you to find one that is worse!  There may be some out there, but I doubt it.  Please share and if you have a tale of woe to go along with it, that is even better!  Here for your Christmas listening displeasure is "Dominick the Donkey" by Lou Monte.
